Research Ethics

All of the research for my PhD is being done under the auspices of the Bath Spa University Research Ethics Committee, and has had both Stage 1 and Stage 2 approval.

I have divided the associated forms and audiences into two strands:

  • Strand 1 - those I am doing interviews with and may wish to quote in the research due to their expertise in wargaming, or urban warfare, or both; and
  • Strand 2 - those who participate in playing my games and who I can reference anonymously and whose data I will largely use in aggregate.

Strand 1 participants will be directly emailed the required ethics forms. Strand 2 participants will either be given hard copies to read and complete, or directed to online versions - listed below. At conferences and similar events I may also display a poster instead of issuing Participant Information Sheets (PIS) and Participant Consent Forms (PCF), where consent is assumed by playing and commenting on the game, and a QR code directs the player to the game pages which include both links to the game surveys and to the forms.

For Strand 2 the forms are:

For both Strands I highlight the potential risks from PTSD and similar issues if the participant has had experience of urban warfare and may find discussing it, or playing a wargame about it triggering, in which case they can either decline to participate or call an immediate halt to proceedings if they begin to feel uncomfortable.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the ethics clearances for my research then please either contact me at david.burden21@bathspa.ac.uk or my Supervisor Dr John Curry (j.curry@bathspa.ac.uk) in the first instance, otherwise please contact the Research Support Office at researchsupportoffice@bathspa.ac.uk.
