The Plot

WARNING - INCLUDES SPOILERS AFTER A WARNING FURTHER BELOW

Dominick Hide is a “corro” or “Correlator” from the year 2130. His job is to hover over 1980s London in a time machine (shaped like a classic flying saucer) and try and re-compile the London Bus timetable from observations - the written records having been destroyed in some “holocaust” in 1999.

Dominick however also has a personal interest in the past. His Great Aunt Mavis has been telling him about his Great Great Grandfather, also called Dominick Hide, who was living in “Port Beal”, London around that time.

Directly dis-obeying his orders Dominick lands one night. Meetings some drunken locals he's told that “Port Beal” must be Portobello, and is given a London A to Z to find it. Dominick hurries back to his time-machine and returns home. That night he shows the book to his partner, Ava, and his friend and work colleague Alric. As he opens the book it dis-integrates - it has aged 150 years.

Undeterred, and against his partner's wishes, Dominick lands again in London 1980. Walking down Portobello Road he asks a stall holder for “Dominick Hide”. Nobody knows him, but Dominick is pointed in the direction of Jim Bean. Jim is delivering some clothes to Jane, and Dominick follows him to her shop. Jane also hasn't heard of Dominick. They all go down the pub, and meet up with some of Jane and Jim's friends, during which Dominick adopts the moniker Gilbey, not telling them his true name.

Then Dominick abruptly leaves to go home. At home he gives Ava, his wife, a rose he has brought back in a sealed case.

Returning a day or so later, Dominick asks Jane if she's found his long lost cousin yet. Jane asks Dominick to help her with some things back to her flat. She asks him to make coffee while she has a bath. He doesn't know how, and then walks in on Jane in the bath. They go off for supper at a restuarant, but Dominick again abruptly leaves. Dominick's Great Aunt Mavis has unearthed some video of his great great grandfather as a young boy. She is beginning to realise that he is going back.

Dominick returns in the middle of Jane's birthday party. They spend the night together. Ava is getting worried by Dominick's behaviour. She opens the box, smells the rose, it withers and dies.

Dominick wakes up and rushes out to get the saucer from its hiding place at a fair ground, but it's been carted off with the funfair to Herne Bay.

Dominick impulsively invites Jane to Herne Bay for the weekend. They play on the beach, and Dominick bemoans the fact that they aren't allowed in the sea “at home”. They go the funfair where Dominick makes arrangements to retrieve the saucer. Jane realises that's why they are here and storms off. They make up and spend the night in a B&B. The next morning Dominick slips out and flies home.

Dominick confronts Ava about the rose, and about how sterile their life is, “You smelt the rose”.

Dominick returns again, meeting his friends in a pub. He tells them a bit of the future. Jane is pleased to see him, but quiet. Then she walks out. Dominick follows her home, tells her the truth, that he loves her, and that he gets such vitality from her, vitality that doesn't exist in his own time.

Jane trumps his announcement by saying that she is pregnant. All the stories about how time travellers can change the future - and hence why they are not allowed to land - come flooding back to him. In panic he flies home.

Caleb is waiting. It was all a put up job. Caleb not only knew what he was doing but had planned it. “They” knew that Dominick was indeed his own Great Great Grandfather, and so “they” had to make sure that he did indeed go back in time and do so.

“Your Great Grandfather was born 1981, or should have been, and now will be”.

Dominick makes one last unofficially sanctioned trip back to see Jane. He has brought “next weeks” paper so that Jane can make money on the pools to set her and her son up for life. They spend a last night together, and as he leaves she asks what to call the child.

“My name, Dominick, Dominick Hide”

Dominick leaves. The theme starts, and we see Jane videoing her son playing on the beach - the video that Dominick saw earlier. Then the credits roll, and we see Dominick and Ava and their new son on the beach.

There is also a full treatment and more screenshots. Note this page may take a while to download due to the number of images.

Another Flip for Dominick - Plot

To follow.

From what I remember a new young Corro emulates Dominick's now legendary journey to the Flipside, falls in love, but gets stuck as his saucer is seized by the authorities. Dominick is sent back to rescue the guy. Whilst there he meets up with Jane again and sees his son. Need to watch it again!
